Galaxy SII's Ice Cream Treat

Samsung has started rolling out its version of Google's newest Android operating system on its current flagship model the Galaxy SII. But those who have the SII on contract may have to wait a little longer for your operator to roll out ICS with their software bundled in, but how long?

Samsung released the following update via its Facebook page: "Samsung UK can confirm that the rollout of Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) on Galaxy S II will be available from the week commencing 19th March." Although they did add that "the availability of software upgrades in the UK will be dependent upon each network's own software approvals process."

So how soon are you going to get ICS:

Good news is that if you're a Three customer you can already download the ICS update. Three announced on their twitter page: "The Ice Cream Sandwich update (4.0) is available on the @Samsung Galaxy SII via Kies for all Three customers"

o2 have been fairly quiet on the release date of its build of ICS for the SII. All that we have been told so far is that the update will land at the end of March, but don't be surprised if you have to wait until April.

Vodafone have been even more quiet and can only confirm that they are in the process of testing the smartphone with a build of ICS. Although some users have noted that another update has been released that seems to pave the way for the full update so don't be surprised if it lands before the end of March.

Orange has had a fairly poor turn around time for updates on the android operating system in the past. The Froyo (Android 2.2) update came months after other networks on the HTC Desire and Gingerbread (2.3) was completely written off from being upgraded. Orange added on its twitter: "We know you're all looking forward to the ICS update. We can confirm that it is being worked on for the Galaxy S II but we don't have a release date at the moment. We will tweet when we have more information or when we get information on other handset updates."

If you happen to have an unlocked or unbranded version of the Galaxy SII then you can also download the update straight away.

In addition to the South Korean phone maker has released an open source of its software publicly to allow developers to make modifications to the stock operating system.

The update brings the Galaxy SII back to the front of the smartphone market and is currently the best specced phone on the market at the moment despite its age.
